Ruby E-Zine

RUBY has just given away a very nice piece of vintage fabric...check it out at http://magazineruby.wordpress.com/

Here is the winning Christmas Memory:
Lynn wrote, “My favourite memory is from when i was about 7 years old. Santa always used to place my stocking on the end of my bed filled with lovely pressies. I woke up in the middle of the night and could see my lovely stocking stuffed full and something poking out of the top. In the half light I couldn’t make out what it was and I gingerly touched it and it was soft. I turned on the light and there was a knitted cat (that my mum had lovingly knitted with great frustration I learned later!) that I just thought was the bees knees. I had been wanting a real kitten for months and months but my mum was allergic to cats and so she gave me the next best thing. I loved that cat and cuddled it in bed for many years until it fell to bits.”

Congratulations Lynn!

I've found a new (to me at any rate) of Pat Sloan's QuiltersHome website at http://patsloan.typepad.com/quiltershome/ YOU might want to check it out. She has a wonderful article on a demo she did at Checker Distributors.

GO GREEN!

I know I've been telling you for a while that it WILL BE SOON!

We are working out some technical problems with our web store as I type this post. We are ALMOST there!

Patterns are rolling in and we will go virtual soon. Why waste our natural resources on hard copy patterns. Not only do they cost the life of a tree but then if not recycled go straight into land fills.

Another advantage of going virtual is that your customers don't pay snail mail prices to get their product. All they need to do is click download and voila...instant pattern. Great promotional tool for your International customers...no more international fees and NO Customs to pay. Everyone wins.

Whether you design quilts, crochet, paper crafts, jewelry, knit, clothing....Even if you are only thinking about designing; we'd love to hear from you. If you design something different than those things listed...don't hesitate to contact us.

Remember we are going live SOON...be among the very first to publish your e Patterns with us. Great deals. Just post to this link..

I'll be able to give you a URL soon!

EXPANDING

Handmade With Love is expanding. We are about ready to release our newest patterns for sale and a new service to pattern designers.

Can't wait for you all to see the newest designs that have been rolling around in our heads. They will soon come to life. We are so excited.

In today's economy it is hard sometimes for folks to justify spending on unnecessary things. And with the skyrocketing costs of shipping it makes it twice as hard to make that decision to purchase. So, I'm looking to expand my business by offering pattern owners the opportunity to have their patterns written in PDF form.

I am also expanding my line of product and would like to carry your patterns, designs and product on consignment.

If you would be interested in either service please contact: Susan Peterman, hand.made.with.love@hotmail.com for details.

Thank you,
Susan

Letting Go!

Letting go of a dream can be very hard for me and taking on new projects is way to easy.

Let's talk about taking on way more than I'm able to handle period. Must less handle well.

"Susan, would you like to ......(you name the project)". My answer, "OH that would be so much fun and it sound very interesting. SURE!", I say.

So...what all am I involved in?
Guild Master of an online guild
2 online shops...one http://www.GrandpaGrandmasAttic.etsy.com
the other http://www.HandmadeWithLove.artfire.com
Editor of the Devotions column for Ruby eZine http://magazineruby.wordpress.com/
2 different blogs
A multitude of online social networking sites
2 Facebook pages...one personal...the other business
2 Twitter pages...both business
A new pattern company to publish first projects this fall
I'm a wife....mother...grandmother...
***Oh and did I mention that I work full time?***
I must be a glutton for punishment.

NOW FOR THE LETTING GO

I will no longer be the Guild Master at Sew What guild on ArtFire as of August 17, 2009. Giving that up for someone who can do a better job that I. New person...new and better ideas...new leadership almost always brings positive change.
Will drop all but 2 of my social networks...praying about which one's to keep and which to let go.

I'm sure as I 'weed out' the many responsibilities in my life that the ones that remain will benefit greatly. More time to invest will mean better products for my online venues and my family.

I know I'm not alone in the issues of taking on more than I'm capable of handling well.
Is it just a woman thing???

I know we are such multi-taskers but honestly....

Port Mansfield Vacation

Beautiful sunsets over the King Ranch as seen from the end of the 500 foot pier at Bay Pirate.

DH and I just returned from our 4 day/3 night vacation in Port Mansfield, Texas. The very best fishing vacation spot in the world.

We stayed in one of The Bay Pirate rental homes. It was not only beautiful but it was also peaceful and relaxing. Their rentals are the most comfortable and clean we have ever stayed in. They offer a full kitchen and all the amenities you would find in a full service hotel. Hospitality is their motto.

We enjoyed a private pier where we caught sea trout and had the time of our life. Many species of fish can be found in the Laguna Madre. And just riding around town was a treat in that there are deer just sitting in yards and roaming the town.

There was a large pig that comes off the King Ranch to eat with the deer and take a cool dip in the water trough. Wild turkey, coon and a myriad of other wild animals can be seen at any given time.

We ate at the nicest little place for breakfast and ribs for dinner. Breakfast was a treat. Greg, the owner, cooks up eggs to order right in front of you while you're filling your plate with sausage, bacon, biscuit, hash browns, etc. from the buffet. It won't take you long to find them they are right on the main road...Sweet Gregory P's Smokehouse Grill. Greg & Miriam own it and they can be also be found online at www.sweetgregoryps.com

Click on Bay Pirate to find them and book your stay today.

WHAT A GREAT DAY

God is so good. That is a total understatement and one we will not know until we are with Him.

For those of you who don't know by now. I work for my local quilt store. It's A Stitch (www.itsastitchonline.com). I am the re-buyer...I get paid to spend their $. WHOO HOO!

Anyway, needing to make a few more dollars in my Etsy shop (www.GrandpaGrandmasAttic.etsy.com) and my Art Fire store (www.HandmadeWithLove.artfire.com) I asked if it would be a conflict of interest if I sold fabric. Promised her I would not carry anything the store carries. She said "YES". Judy and her husband, John, gave me their blessing.

They are really two very awesome people (not just because of this). They really are. They have 2 daughters. One of which is a two time cancer survivor. Kim is a young woman who has surmounted tremendous odds and God has been very good to her and her parents.

So, now I'm off to my sewing room to get ready for the transformation! Next Saturday my DH and I are off to the local wholesaler and I'll start buying fabric to put in my online stores! This is so exciting!

I'll run take pics of the before and post them. THEN after I buy my first few bolts I'll be off to post those and hopefully sell....sell....sell......!

See y'all in a bit.

Sewing Room

Here is a picture of the apron I made this morning! The fabric I chose, the pocket being sewn on and the finished project. Pretty wouldn't you agree?

Thought I'd post a couple pictures of my sewing room. Actually it was our garage at one point. BUT, has been taken over thanks to my DH! He gladly gave up all his domain for my sewing.

He wanted to put carpeting down but I protested and won~ after all I would be the one to have to vacuum and we all know what dropped pins, etc. do to vacuum cleaners. It was as good of an excuse as any right?

Maybe I'll post more photos. Like those of my bookshelves, ironing surface, computer area, and all my sewing stash! Well...maybe not ALL that would be a little...should I say overwhelming?

My finished project from SEW WHAT Guild

I have promised for a very long time to publish the photo from my Fat Quarter exchange on SEW WHAT.

My exchange partner was Karen Gass.

Here is the before.....................................................and the after!

The planning was a community effort by my co-workers at It's A Stitch (my REAL job).

The implementing was challenging. However, I arose to the occasion and after snipping cutting and otherwise re-arranging the piece a million times...the decision was made to make QUILT DIVA just what she is...quirky and not so "put together" as it were.

Hope you enjoy her as much as I did in making the piece.

After our SEW WHAT BLOG TOUR we need to set that up...I'll do the planning and co-coordinating this time. ) D

Thanks Karen! This was SEW much fun.

SEWING TRIVIA

“OK, you say….I've got the project…I’ve chosen my fabrics… NOW what about thread?”
Matching colors to fabric that’s simple enough. But which thread is right for the project?

ALL PURPOSE (cotton-covered polyester core) - this thread is not what it seems. While it proclaims to be all purpose it is not suitable for every project. It is most commonly used because it is polyester and is strong, and stretches. The cotton is smooth and therefore sews easier. This thread can be used on natural or synthetic fabrics as well as knits and wovens. It is generally good for either hand stitching or machine sewing.

UPHOLSTERY, BUTTON OR CRAFT - if you’re projects are of the heavy duty type then you’ll need these threads. They are the heaviest and strongest and have a special glazed finish that stops abrasion tangling. Need to tuft buttons on a cushion? Finish an upholstery project, attach trim or braid to rugs? Then this is the thread for you!

RAYON - Does your project call for rayon? Well, if you’re doing decorative or machine-embroidery then this thread is a very good option. Rayon has a shiny texture that causes it to look like silk. Rayon comes in a variety of colors: solids as well as variegated. Read the manufactures directions for special care of the threads and you will need to use a 40 or 30 weight in the needle. However, you will need to use a finer weight in the bobbin when machine embroidering or for other decorative effects.

SILK - This is the strongest and the most brilliant. However, they are among the more expensive because it is made from long, continuous fibers that has vibrant sheen. It stretches and so is a good choice for garment construction and tailoring. Use 50-weight for all-purpose machine sewing and 100 weight for applique’ and heirloom sewing. If you want to use silk for top stitching, quilting, or embroidery then you’ll want to use 30-weight silk.

METALLIC - Your choices here are just about unlimited. This thread glistens and is used (for the most part) in decorative stitching. And because it comes in so many colors (solids and variegated) it makes a good choice for satin stitches or machine quilting. When used in overlock (sergers) sewing it can be used in the loopers and for normal sewing machines this thread can be used in the needles. . Metallic threads shred, splinter and ravel so it is a good choice for bobbin work as it doesn’t have to pass through the needle.

100% COTTON - At one time this thread was the only thread available for the home-sewing project. With the improvement in durability and versatility of other threads it has wained in popularity. Best results are achieved with this thread when hand or machine sewing cotton and linen fabrics. 100% cotton mercerized thread is smooth, light, and colorfast. It does have a slight stretch but it ideal for quilting on cotton fabrics.
