IT'S BLACK FRIDAY

Does anyone know why today is called "BLACK FRIDAY"? Is it because retailers depend on this one day to keep them (or put them in the black)?

Makes no since to me.

Hopefully all of you here in the good old USA had a wonderful "turkey day". We spent ours with our oldest daughter, son-in-law, 3 grandchildren and all of her in-laws. It was a wonderful day. Ate way more than I should have and things I didn't need or was supposed to eat. BUT I had my fill. Now it's back to the good 'ol diabetic diet.

Hope you folks have a wonderful shopping day. We are not shopping today. I have the day off from It's A Stitch. My husband, youngest daughter and I are staying home in the warmth of our home. We will put a fire in the fireplace....make turkey soup....watch old movies...play games and otherwise CHILL OUT!

If you're doing any shopping online today be sure and check out http://www.itsastitchonline.com/ and my online store at http://grandpagrandmasattic.etsy.com/.

No matter where you shop; be safe and have fun.

Until later.

HAPPY DAY BEFORE TURKEY DAY

Today I get off work at It's A Stitch in Humble, Texas at 3 p.m. We are ready to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday with lots of turkey, southern cornbread dressing, some dirty rice; mixed turnip, collard, and mustard greens (from my Cajun roots), pies....and all sorts of desert.

Oh course, being a diabetic, I'll have to watch the amount of foods I eat....and choose which ones I feel will be "worth" indulgence. I will be careful...hope all you diabetics out there will do the same. Taking care of ourselves is the most important thing.

Please don't forget to check out our specials at http://www.itsastitchonline.com/. New items are listed weekly; as are discount (online) coupons.

While your on line also check out my Etsy site at http://grandpagrandmasattic.etsy.com

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERY ONE.

GOOD MORNING

Today is Friday. I am thankful for Friday's.

The weekend will bring many changes for The Quilting Attic, Grandma Susan Quilts, Quilting Savvy, Grandpagrandmasattic at Etsy and for me personally Susan.

My friend, Janace, and I will be working on new projects for all my sites. All projects will be unique and individualized to suit each site....SO be on the lookout for the NEW and EXCLUSIVE "STUFF". Hopefully you will not be disappointed.

My mother, Mary, is gaining quite a following with Mary's Sewing Basket. She does custom embroidery from her home in Baytown, TX. I am so proud of her. She and I will also be working on projects together over the Internet SO be watching for that as well.

Until I post again. God bless you all.

Today IS a New Day

Yea! God has given us another day. To live, love, play, work and to do what ever we choose to do.
Hopefully, we include Him in our plans; or better yet.............ask Him what our plans should be!

Quilting is truly a passion for me. Finding time in which to enjoy that passion becomes very hard to find.

Any ideas out there as to where a full time employed mother of a 16 year old daughter, 3 grandchildren (by my oldest 33 year old daughter), wife of 37 years can find time to enjoy her passion for quilting.

NO TIME.....for the fun things.

Don't forget to check out my Etsy store at http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=82991
Remember God gives us all the same 24 hour time frame. It is HOW we use that time that truly matters.

HOUSTON INTERNATIONAL QUILT FESTIVAL

Good news!
Janace and I survived the SHOPPING at the festival yesterday. :)
The quilts (as usual) were simply gorgeous. What some people can do with fabric and thread. Amazing. A lot a talent in this world.
We shopped 'til we dropped...and still didn't see it all. What a shame. Was thinking about going back today (last day) but don't think I'll be able to do it.

Will start on Beginning Quilting Definitions tomorrow.

HOUSTON INTERNATIONAL QUILT FESTIVAL IS IN TOWN

All my friends have been. I go Saturday with my friend Janace.
It is a really cool place to be. I'll bet Janace comes away being one of the best quilters in the Houston Area.

Shopping, looking at quilts, shopping, and oh yes....MORE SHOPPING.

Today we will do the C's of quilting definitions for the beginning quilters:

....Chain Piecing: When you sew patches together in one long continuous line. No cutting the thread until you're done.

....Continuous-line Quilting: Quilting a design in a line that keeps on going. No stopping and starting at different places.

....Corner Square: A square that fills the spots in the corners of the quilt borders.

....Corner Triangles: The four triangles placed in the corners of on-point/diagonal set patches; half square triangles, and straight grain are on the shorter sides of the triangle.

....Cornerstones: Sashing Squares (squares of fabric) that are used to join the sashing strips at where they come together in an intersection.

OK.....more tomorrow.

MORE BEGINNING QUILTING TERMS

Yesterday I started a Beginners Quilting terms log. These are common terms quilters use everyday.

....Backing: The bottom layer of a quilt.

....Backstitch: The stitches taken (2) when sewing a running stitch. This keeps the stitching in place.

....Basting: These are long running stitches used to temporarily hold the fabrics in place. Used until the piece can be permanently sewn down.

....Batting: The middle layer of a quilt. This can be either polyester or cotton. Batting comes in various sizes...from a high loft (really fluffy) to a low loft (really flat) and some where in between. I prefer cotton batting.

....Bearding: Polyester fibers in batting can work their way through to the top of a quilt. This leaves a "beard" affect. Not a desirable out come for a quilt you've worked so hard on.

....Betweens: The needles used in hand stitching (quilting) the layers of the quilt together.

....Bias Grain: Fabric grain runs at a 45° angle. Sewing on the bias will give you the greatest amount of stretch in your project. GOOD for binding; NOT so great for the quilt body.

....Binding: The finished edge of a quilt...it actually frames the entire piece.

....Bleeding: When one color transfers into another. This can be VERY messy. Prewashing your fabric is a must. Especially reds.

....Block: The unit created once the smaller elements have been stitched together. They can be either hand sewn, machine stitched, or appliqued together.

....Borders: Strips of fabric that are placed around the blocks. Either patchwork or strips of fabric can be used depending on the look desired in the finished project.

More tomorrow....

Until later.

THE HOUSTON INTERNATIONAL QUILT FESTIVAL

Good morning everyone.

I am so excited...fall is in the air (at least the Texas version of fall)! As anyone in the quilting world knows fall means QUILT FESTIVAL. A friend and I are going on Saturday for a full day of oohing and ahhing...at the beautiful quilts that come from all over the globe.

Oh, we might "have to" do a little shopping as well ;).

I love FESTIVAL time. It is a very exciting time for all quilters. We can see others works of art and all the newest "gadgets" for the quilting Diva in all of us.

The store, It's A Stitch, my full-time job...is bustling with shop owners from all over the world. And beginning today we will have quilt shoppers coming in to "shop 'til they drop". If you live in the greater Houston area come on over and visit us. We'd love to meet you.

While you're surfing the web this morning you might want to check out http://www.itsastitchonline/ there are many new products, weekly specials and clearance items.

Don't forget to check out my Etsy store at http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=82991

Hope you all have a great day.

BEGINNING QUILTING TERMS

TV programs were my first introduction to the world of quilting. I watched Simply Quilts with Alex Anderson daily. However, she spoke a language so foreign to me I couldn't help but think "this is way above my head".

Not to be to discouraged I decided to keep watching...then a bright idea occurred to me....WHY NOT TAKE A BEGINNING CLASS? That was all it took! I was hooked!

My mother and I started a business in Old Town Spring near our home. It was so wonderful I got to sit and quilt and sew all day. I loved it. As life changed so did our business.

For you newbies out there..... the next few blogs will feature definitions for some of the most common quilting terms.

.....Alternate Blocks: Secondary blocks that alternate with main blocks in a quilt. They can be plain, pieced or appliqued.

....Applique: The technique used for sewing fabric shapes on top of other pieces of fabric.

Please remember to check out our Etsy store at http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=82991
We appreciate your business.

Until later.

Sometimes it just helps to sit back and think

I've been thinking all day (not to unusual for me) about what I will do with my new blog.
Many ideas have come to mind....you know....all the "how to's" and "what for's" and "how comes" of quilting.

While I'm still trying to get my blog together please check out my store on Etsy. Grandpagrandmasattic is the name.

Just go to Etsy.com and in the search bar type in Grandpagrandmasattic and in the drop down box next to it click on seller: usernames. My shop will appear!

Thanks for visiting me on my blog and for taking a look at my Etsy store.
